AI disclosure for TikTok, Reels and Shorts: what to toggle and when

A practical checklist for labeling synthetic UGC on each platform, what the policies actually require for ads, and why the label does not hurt reach.

Synthetic faces are allowed in ads on every major platform. What the platforms ask for is disclosure: a label that tells viewers a realistic person or scene was generated or altered with AI. This guide is the checklist we use for every reel that opens with a UGCFact clip.

The short version

  1. Turn on the platform’s AI content toggle at publish time.
  2. Never present the persona as a real customer or testimonial.
  3. Keep the clip’s metadata intact when you export (our files carry generated-content tags).
  4. Mention “AI-generated reaction” in the caption when the reel is an ad, even if the toggle is on.

TikTok

On the post screen, open More options and enable AI-generated content. TikTok also auto-detects C2PA credentials, but the toggle is what counts for policy. For paid promotion through TikTok Ads Manager, the creative must be labeled as well; using an unlabeled synthetic face in an ad is the main reason accounts get creatives rejected.

Instagram Reels

Under Advanced settings choose Add AI label. Meta’s rule covers “photorealistic video” of people created or altered with AI. The label shows as “AI info” on the post. Boosted reels inherit the label; Ads Manager campaigns need the digitally created flag at ad level.

YouTube Shorts

In Details → Altered content, answer yes to “makes a real person appear to say or do something they didn’t” only if that applies; for a synthetic persona, the correct disclosure is synthetic or altered content. YouTube shows the label in the description for Shorts.

What the policies do not require

  • You do not need to watermark the video visually.
  • You do not need to name the model or the vendor.
  • You do not need a disclaimer longer than the toggle unless you are in a regulated vertical (finance, health claims), where your normal ad rules apply regardless of AI.

Our side of the deal

Every UGCFact clip page declares digitalSourceType: trainedAlgorithmicMedia in its structured data, every file is tagged, and we never generate real people’s likeness. Read the full AI disclosure and the license for the details.

FAQ

Does the AI label reduce reach?

Not in our data. Labeled reels scored the same as unlabeled ones from the same account. The label is a compliance toggle, not a ranking signal.

Do I need the label if the face is only two seconds long?

Yes. The rule is about realistic synthetic people appearing at all, not about duration.
