The reaction → demo formula for short-form ads

Why a five-second human reaction in front of your product footage beats the footage alone, and how to build the cut in under ten minutes.

September 1, 2026 · format · hooks · creative

Most product ads fail in the first second, and it is not because the demo is bad. A product shot is a product shot: it looks like every other product shot in the feed. Feeds scroll past it. Put a face reacting to something for two seconds before the demo and the same recording suddenly earns the view.

That is the whole formula: reaction → hard cut → demo. Here is how each piece works and how to assemble it.

1. The reaction (0 to ~2.5 s)

A close-up selfie of a person feeling something specific: annoyed, stunned, moved, confused. No speech, so any text fits. The hook text sits on top in the platform’s native style, boxed or plain. The viewer reads the text, sees the face confirm the emotion, and wants to know what caused it.

Our clips are built for exactly this slot. They are 1080×1920, five seconds, and each one is tagged with the reaction it shows so you can match the feeling to your hook.

2. The hard cut

No transition. The reaction ends mid-breath and the demo starts on frame one of the interesting part. In our data, reels cut at 2.5 seconds average a score of 439 across 201 posts, versus 410 at 2 seconds and 414 at 5 seconds. The cut itself is a hook: it answers the question the face asked.

Avoid crossfades, zooms and whooshes. They read as “ad” and cost you the native feel the reaction just bought.

3. The demo (2.5 to ~12 s)

Show the product doing the one thing the hook promised. Keep the footage clean, crop to 9:16, and put a short caption under the hook text if the flow needs context. End on the result, not on a logo. Ten seconds of demo is plenty; the reel should stay under fifteen seconds.

Assembly in ten minutes

  1. Pick a reaction that matches the hook’s emotion. Regret and confession hooks work with a teary or annoyed face; surprising facts work with a stunned laugh.
  2. Write the hook in two lines, lowercase, specific. See the hook library for 380+ tested lines grouped by angle.
  3. Preview the cut in the Reel Builder with your own footage. Nothing is uploaded.
  4. Download the clip, drop it into CapCut or your editor with the demo, add the text overlay and a trending sound.
  5. Enable the platform’s AI label and post.

Why it keeps working

The reaction is cheap to swap. When a hook stops performing, keep the demo, change the face and the text, and post again the same day. That is why we built a factory instead of shooting a batch: new reactions every morning mean you never run out of fresh openers for the same demo.

FAQ

How long should the reaction be?

Two to three seconds on screen is the sweet spot in our data. The clip is five seconds long so you can pick the best window.

Does the demo need a voiceover?

No. Most of our top reels use on-screen text only, with a trending sound underneath.
